It is often very time-consuming to provide more feedback to your students the first time you use this approach in a specific course. A suggestion: one way to reduce this burden is to save the feedback you are giving students in a categorized file. You will find that in time you can almost predict the questions students will ask and you can anticipate their problems. Knowing this, you can formulate replies to these common questions with appropriate suggestions. Then when a student asks for help you don’t have to start with a blank screen to construct your reply; simply go to your file for this question or problem, copy what you have previously written, and then tailor it to that specific student. This is the concept of mass customization. While you give your students feedback that is customized to them (to their question, problem, or misunderstanding), you draw from a large file that’s already stored and modify it to fit. This is akin to providing a customer a previously made off-the-rack suit that you have taken in at the waist a bit and cuffed the pants to get an exact fit. The result is a suit that fits perfectly, produced in far less time.
